you can agree to it at beginning of game. When I played, we always agreed that you cannot go backwards.
but according to http://www.mastersgames.com/rules/chines... you can move in any six directions.

theres 6 triangles right so one two or three ppl can play and you gotta take a color and the color thats opposite and you can only move by hopping a piece over another and you keep hopping till all the pieces in the triangle swap with the opposite triangle. actually im not sure if you can only hop or if you're allowed to move one step as well. if its set up nicely you can make long zig zag jumps like in checkers to quickly transport pieces across. cant explain in too much detail. you'll get the hang of it heh. no instructions in the box? :p
