For example, do you think that a 50-year old man looks younger today than a 50-year old man in the 1800's? What might be some of the factors in this phenomenon?

Also, if you do not think so, say why.

it depends on the inherited genes, my wife's family looked younger than their age... her mom and her aunts and cousins...
its the result of mixed races...

Yes, actually. It's a proven fact that those who have access to better medical care have fewer diseases and therefore age more slowly, as most physicians who treat low-income patients can tell you. A rough life (and life in general was rougher in the 1800s) will age you quickly. Mind you, there isn't all that much of a difference between the 1800s as you might find in someone from, say, the 1500s or earlier, but even in that little time, you'll find that the average height of the people shot up on the basis of better nutrition and fewer epidemics that strained the bodies of those who suffered them.

I think they look younger today....simply cuz our lifestyle has so improved in a 100 years.

We now have to work less hours in the week (tho it HAS become way more stressful, I guess), our hygiene-standards has proved immensely, nowadays many of us got the means to actually go on holiday, or celebrate it in our own country by making daytrips....not an option back then.

Also, quite a few people didn't even live to get 50 back then, cuz the medical standard wasn't nearly as high as it is now. (to put it mildly)

Oh, there are many more things that have changed dramatically, but I guess you know them all already.

I think compared to the 1800's, yes people today look much younger. When I look at pictures of people for that era, they always look older than their age. They look miserable too. I have heard that back then they didn't believe in smiling in pictures and I guess one reason they look older than their age is because they had to work so hard....they didn't have the modern conveniences that we have today....

Yes I think so. I think people are starting to look younger & younger then there real age. I'm 17 & people always ask are you for real? You look like your about 14. So.

Then again some people have plastic surgery to look like they do.

Yes I believe so. People don't work as hard as they did back in the 1800's and we have meds that they didn't.

I don't know about that but I do know that the 12 year old girls look closer to 17 that they did in the 1960s

well, with men it is due to less manual labor & more office work, etc. however more men are getting plastic surgery... that is a big excuse for women too... going plastic...

as for younger people looking older... i have noticed that & have absolutely no answer other than a bizarre sense of evolution...

He who is of calm and happy nature will hardly feel the pressure of age, but to him who is of an opposite disposition youth and age are equally a burden.
