My co-worker invited me to a Thanksgiving Dinner at his family's place. Is it OK to bring like a bottle of wine with me as a present (I don't know if showing up empty handed will be too nice)? What kind of wine is appropriate?

Wine is always a good choice, but check with your co-worker to see if they usually drink wine at thanksgiving (oh, and as everyone has said, if you bring wine, bring a white to go with the turkey, I recommend Brander Sav Blanc if you live in Cali). If not, you might want to bring some biscotti's or chocolates for after dinner. Bringing a pie is ok, but if they aren't planning on you bringing a pie, that might leave them with too many leftovers.
Oh, and you might want to check on dress code. If they all wear sweatshirts and jeans, you don't really want to show up in a suit. A dress shirt and slacks is usually a safe way to go though.
Happy Turkey Day!

Sure!!! Wine is the nectar of the gods(...or thats what I like to think) Since it is Thanksgiving, turkey(being a white meat) calls for a nice white wine.(Sauvignon blanc, or a Chardonay would be perfect. The white wine will compliment the turkey beautifully. You would only use a red wine if the meal was a red meat dish or pasta and tomatoe sauce, something along those lines. But then again bringing a pie, or dessert is fine too. But vino(wine) is perfect, classy etiquette!!! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you're not sure about their alcohol consumption you could take a pot of mums a poinsettia or some other seasonal plant. A pie or some other dessert would be good (from a bakery is fine, no need for homemade). You could take something "snacky" in a gift pack like mixed nuts or dried fruit.

If you really want to take wine, ask your co-worker if they drink alcohol (it would really suck to take a bottle of wine to a recovering alcoholic!)

That is a lovely courtesy but only if you are sure they drink alcohol. You wouldn't want to offend anyone or present a problem to a family with a recovering alcoholic. Just get a nice Chardonnay by Berringer or Robert Mondavi. It's mid-priced and good wine.

Otherwise, a floral arrangement is a nice thing to bring also.

Wine can work, although you might check with the host or hostess first. It does have potential negatives though - they may feel obliged to serve it, whether or not it works with the meal, or perhaps they don't drink.

A plant is nice - the recipient doesn't feel obligated to use it immediately, like they would with flowers, food, or wine. If you knew his family well, you could pick something more personal, but a plant is nearly always welcome.

Yes, but one bottle won't do for everyone...best to bring two. Otherwise, a floral piece or pot of mums for the step. A great dessert from a nice bakery is good too.
If you decide on wine...bring white.

Well, if they are having turkey a white wine is good or if they are having something else adjust it accordingly. We always have a nice white wine and a Cabernet.

Pie's a lot safer.

The Argentinian whites are decent, though & go pretty well w/turkey.
