Hmmm! Nice question! :-)

I can do many things with an IP address, like getting...

• Country
• Country Code
• Region
• Region Code
• City
• City ID
• Latitude
• Longitude
• Timezone
• Time/Date
• Swatch Time
• Weather Report
• Distance (from another location)

And, I have already made an application (web-based) to gather all the above info, from just an IP address. I have also created a World map (image file), where, this point of location (of the IP) is shown.

Since, the application is for our own company use, I can't show you a demo!

But, you will give me (by PM or email) your IP address (or any other IP address), I can send you all these details.

:-)

IP addresses are the telephone numbers to the computer that the ISP assigns to you.

For Dial-up, the IP changes every time you dial in.

For DSL and Cable, the IP is assigned by the provider and usually renewed each day using the same IP address.

Yes, IP addresses are traceable, yes you can hide (or mostly hide) an IP address. But, no, it is not completely hidden. Your ISP knows what IP you use, and there are programs that can still find IP's even when hidden. Homeland Security and the FBI uses these programs.

Also, your MAC address is burned in your NIC card/Modem card. And, your computer can be traced by the MAC address.

IP addresses provide a means for contact of the person holding the address. Problems with IP addresses sometimes occur, and this information aids in it's resolution. Dynamic IP addresses, such as those used by most people in thier homes don't have this information recorded. Inquiries about dynamic addresses only leads to the ISP, and only they are privy to who is using them. It takes a court order (usually) for them to release this information. Some IP addresses are managed by someone other than the owneer, so you can't contact them directly.

If you don't want a street address published, you can have somebody manage it for you, or you can list a P.O. box.

What can you do with an IP address? Well, I suppose you could go to court and get a court order to force the owner of the address (the ISP) to tell you who was using it at the time you collected it. You'd have to have a darn good reason for the judge to even let you into his court room.

Beyond that, it's pretty useless info.
