Yesterday my desktop picture disappeared. Today my wife moved the computer, etc across the room, and now the colors are VERY faded, especially on the left, but also what should be solid colored, like the task bar, runs from faded red to faded purple. Windows XP, about four-year old system. Coincidence? Bad monitor? Bad card, whatever that is?
Ran Restore, disk cleanup, no help. Reset display colors, no help. Any suggestions?

You didn't mention if the monitor is the large CRT or a new flat screen.

If it is the large CRT unit there is a menu button somewhere. Poke around in the menu until you find the "degauze" option and use it. The screen gets weird for just a second or two and suddenly, voila, the picture looks good as new.

If you have a flat screen, I am sorry to inform you, but it is about to give up the ghost. I was dismayed when my flat screen quit only two months after the warranty ran out. The techs at the store told me that 3.5 to 4 years is max for a flat screen. Shame isn't it! My old CRT that came with my first PC still works great. It was new in 1997!!!! Still going strong.

Try these last few tests.

Use the Menu Button on the Monitor itself. Go to the Colour option and see if that helps.

On the monitor is a Degauss. It will either be a button by itself, or it will be in the Menu (mine is in the menu on the main menu page with a - sign next to it meaning to use the minus button)

If the colour manager or Deguas doesn't work....

Try the monitor on a PC where the monitor is working as you expect. if the colours are still faded, then the monitor may be going.

Check to see if your monitor is still under Manufacterer Warranty. Some monitors have a 2 year, some up to five years. Go to the website and check what you need to do if it is still under Warranty. The website will also tell you if your monitor is still under warranty.

It's most likely to be a bad monitor. If the whole screen is pinkish / blueish / greenish, then it may be the VGA Cable. There There is coler spot on the side or four corner, check for strong magnatic interference such as speaker or light source (power cable).

Color issue generally are not software / computer related.

If degauss doesn't work just get a new monitor. They're not worth trying to fix.
But, if the problem got a lot worse when you moved it, hitting deguass a few times will probably help.

I have a monitor that is like this and I have to adjust the gamma and make it brighter using internal calibration in games and with my video card's control panel.

This just happens with CRTs over time.

I recommend getting a new LCD panel if it's become as bad as you say.

Try a lot of what the other people said, but also if you have speakers next to the monitor, move them away. If not shielded, they can cause the problems you described. Also, fluorescent lightning can do the same.

Most likely your monitor is going bad. If there are any speakers or magnets close to it you might try moving those away.

Buying a new monitor is probably your best solution.

it is actually a magnetic field which is caused by near by electrical forces. no need to worry
just call a close by TV mechanic and tell him that the monitor is having magnetic field effect. he will have a device to remove this faded colour. it takes only 2 minutes to rectify this.

Make sure cables are all tight. Make sure video card is tucked in tight. Things can work loose when you move them.

If you cannot turn up a problem you might have to see a computer repairman. 8-)
