Gavin DeGraw has that song that says, "I don't want to be anything other than what I've been trying to be lately/All I have to do is think of and I have peace of mind/I'm tired of looking around rooms wondering what I gotta do, and who I'm supposed to be/I don't want to be anything other than me/". Everywhere I go, I see posers, pretenders, hypocrites, and wannabes. They say that teenage years are when people struggle with identity. I think teenage years are when people BEGIN to struggle with identity. Even in churches, where some people go to find some genuineness, there just often is none of that nor is it encouraged. In our society, pretending is politically correct, and being real and genuine is offensive.

Oh, come on! I don't agree with your last sentence AT ALL. It's the easiest thing in the world to be yourself. & unless you're absolutely HORRID you'll be accepted like the rest of us who don't have any difficulty being genuine. There are times when it's not APPROPRIATE not to go spouting off the mouth if it would offend someone, like putting down what they believe in, or--let's carry it one step further--being SO honest you volunteer to tell someone they look awful, etc., but the basic YOU is a no brainer. Many people behave the way they THINK others expect them to, (which may be totally in error), & possibly because they want everyone to "like" them, even if they aren't truly the person being "liked--" If you're yourself, you'll learn who your friends really are, & hey--you might even learn to like YOURSELF!

You make some great points , I see people all the time putting on their masks as they go through their days . I can't handle that either , I try my best never to put on aires . I feel like if you come to my home and have dinner
you should meet the same person as I am any other time .

Just Me !

In my opinion, it's difficult to be real and genuine because most of us have to deal with the opinions and influence of other individuals. If that weren't the case, then it would be easier; since most of us need at least a touch of social contact, however, I suspect being your own true self will always be rocky.

I think that being real and genuine is always appretiated. People deep down strive to be genuine, but because of hangups they fall short of it. What people don't realize is being genuine is the easiest way to be....cause when you just be yourself you're not putting any effort into be something your not. I hear your frustration though.

People like to look good in the eyes of others. Lies will do the trick.
