A lot of people will go to a community college (2yr) to get their prerequisites out of the way and then go on to a 4yr college to finish up their education for their bachelors or masters degree.

Some careers only require an associates degree.

Most people go from the Bachelors (4 years) to the Master's(another 2+) to the PhD(more years). Some only go two years...thats an associates and not really worth much. All of the degrees are "real" degrees...

Students graduate from college with a Bachelor of Arts degree, if they want a higher degree they get a Master of Arts Degree.
