According to the myth a depressed actor playing a munchkin hanged himself in the background of that scene. It is actually an exotic bird spreading it's wings and spinning around which is the basis for that myth.

I dont know about this girl with the part theory.
But in a quick scene as they are at the house where the tin man is standing there, as the camera pans past the house (going left) there is a sillouette in the background amongst the trees.
From what i've heard from several sources, this is the rumored dead body.
However people who were involved with the movie (over the years) have claimed this was just painting in the background.
The only thing i've heard was a munchkin.
