i dont get the tutorials in my crochet book or the online tutorials i've been reading.
can someone plz explain it to me.... except in words i can understand?

Put the hook through a stitch put the yarn around the hook and pull it through the stitch and the loop on the hook.
Take a look at this link because it has both a diagram and a short video.

It is so hard to figure some of these things out from written words - There was one website I found that had video about how to knit, but I haven't found one for crochet.

Go to your local craft store and wander around in the yarn section with a crochet hook - ask people - most will be happy to help if they know how!

Yarn people are friendlier than you think!

You put the crochet hook through the first stitch in the chain, loop the yarn around the hook, and pull the hook back out of the first stitch, leaving the loop of yarn on the hook. Then you start crocheting normally with the second stitch in the original chain.
