Technically? So that they don't pee and poop everywhere. I'll gladly let my 16 month old go diaperless if you clean up the messes and replace my carpeting when he is potty trained :)
There is a growing movement towards what laymen call infant potty training, people who use it call it Elimination Communication. They learn to read their childs cues as to when they need to use the potty, and put them on. After a short while, the child learns to hold it until they are taken to the appropriate place to go. In that case, the child does not wear diapers.

Babies don't HAVE to wear diapers. Babies in China don't. Most people in the western world don't realize that babies have a lot more control over their bodily functions than the diaper manufacturers would lead us to believe. Some moms will sigh with frustration that their babies will pee or poo immediately after they take their diaper off. It is not due to the rush of cold air, it is because the baby does not want to soil themself if they don't have to. In the american culture, we actually "diaper train" our babies, then two or so years later we "potty train" them-- how strange!
My baby has been signalling to me that she has to pee and poo her whole life. I started picking up on it when she was about 7 weeks old. Today, she only poops in her diaper about once a month or so and she often pees in the potty rather than in a diaper. She signals me by grunts, body language, and crying. I respond by taking her to a potty. I let her know it is okay to go by signaling a "pssss" sound to her. She goes, and 30 seconds later I'm taking her off the potty. This is called "elimination communication" and is a viable alternative to diapers. I work full time outside of the home and also have an active toddler, so even busy families can do "EC."

Now babies do so they don't mess up carpet. Some countries think diapers are disguisting, and they don't use them (although I bet they don't have carpet), like a previous person said it's called elimination communication. A lot of americans are practicing that now. I put in a history of diapers down there. Disposable diapers fill up our landfills and take hundreds of years to decompose. It's disguisting! Sorry had to throw in my hippy rant there ;) For those who wonder, I think cloth or EC is the best.

Because especially moms could be free damping the soiled diapers and changing new ones rather than running around to clean with a rag when the babies pee and poop.

because they are not capable of going to the bathroom by themselves yet, and it's either a disposable diaper or a lot of soiled laundry that somebody is going to have to wash
