I'm thinking, at least with a verbal one, you are there to defend yourself. Your thoughts?

Written is worse, especially on a computer, where it stays in cyberspace forever to haunt you. I was doing some research for work the other day, and found an article I had written six years ago, and how it read wasn't what I meant.

Plus, it is difficult to express sarcasm or inflection with written words, and in theory, one could have time to organize one's thoughts and proofread before committing words to paper.

Verbals can be covered sometimes with humor or facial expressions, but written is most always interpreted literally. There may also be a delayed reaction with the written as you may not realize right away what you've done. A sincere apology goes a long way to remove the effects.

Both are pretty bad...

Words can't be taken back in whatever form they are established.

Regardless of whether or not you really meant it at the time, nothing can erase the mistake.

Of course if it's written, you can say you weren't thinking or you weren't in the right state of mind or whatever excuse you feel like.

And when it's actually said, you can defend yourself and take it back and replace it with something else.

But either way, you've made the faux pas... And must make amends or spill the truth.

I'm thinking neither are bad. Written can be erased and rewritten, verbal can be thought over and restated. A Faux Pas can be a beautiful thing at the right time :)

Written...although the spoken word can also be unforgettable, the written word is always evidence in itself.
When you say something you can always deny you said it or try to fix the whole thing with more words, written things are harder to deny and to forget.
Written words last more than a lifetime, spoken words can fly with the wind.

I have to agree. Also, if your written faux pas was particularly heinous; someone might make many, many copies and even distribute them :-(

Yeah, I agree with you. A written one, they have to look at forever. Words can be explained and forgotten.
