Glyphosate (Round-Up) is good and has approximately 30 days residual effect which means it's good for that long and after that
it will break down and will not be harmful to the environment.

You could also use rock salt scattered and this will burn off the
grass.

Depending on the size of the area you could also cover the area with a tarpaulin flat on the ground and in time will restrict light
oxygen and water and the grass will eventually die off.

WOW gas and motor oil!!!!!! You people are so seriously polluting the environment you should be ashamed of yourselves. Never mind what you are doing to the groundwater supply. The best method is to buy a sheet of plastic and lay it on the grass. The sun will "burn" it up and it will be dead in a few days. No really!!!!!! GAS AND OIL???????? FOR-SHAME!!!!!!

IF YOU PUT WET NEWSPAPER DOWN IT WILL DIE IN ABOUT A WEEK. IT IS SAFE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND IS VERY CHEAP, ACTUALLY FREE IF YOU GET THE NEWSPAPER EVERY DAY. IF YOU LIVE WHERE IT IS WINDY THAN YOU MAY HAVE TO PUT SOME BRICK OR WOOD DOWN SO THAT YOUR NEWSPAPER DOES NOT BLOW AWAY OR JUST KEEP IT VERY WET. GOOD LUCK..
