Well that's something that's not new to my ears! Even some Chinese Americans just assume all fair skin Asians are Chinese!
I mean my last boyfriend (Cantonese Chinese American) thought I was Chinese or a mutt! HOW INSULTING!!!!!!
His explanation: "Growing up the only Asians I ever saw were Chinese or Japanese, not Vietnamese, Thais, or even Filipinos."
Then he went on to comment that I might be mixed Asian because I looked funny to him! He thought I was half White or something. Weird! Why? He realized my last name was long and that it was not Chinese or any other Asian last names he has ever seen. Then he went on to make stereotypical statements that Asians should look a certain way, they way his people do!
He flat out and just blurted, "you're not short like Chinese girls, you have big eyes that looks Caucasian but not "Asian eyes," and you spoke a language that I thought was at first a weird Mandarin dialect."How insulting because my language, besides Japanese is one of the few most beautiful Asian languages!
How to say hello: Sabai dee!
So you see even American ignorance has even spread over to many Asians to make them believe they should even look a certain way!

That's wrong. Asians are Jews, Turks, Russians, Iraqis, Persians, Indians, Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Georgians, Armenians, and Syrians. Lebanese and many others. Since China is the biggest and closest to the US Asian country Americans call all Chinese looking people Asians which is incorrect, but that's American tradition: Columbus called native Americans - Indians and it stuck :-)

Because most asians or orientals at least are chinese. The other majority, (most south asians) are indian, although india is pretty well comparible in racial cultural diversity to all of europe.
I mean china has one billion people. japan about 100,
viet a small number, korea probably about the same.
Some people just don't have alot of exposure to people of other cultures.
Anyway, does it really matter. I mean, yes, there is HUGE culture differences but well you know, do you care if my ancestors were scottish or say romanian? Can you tell the difference? I can't.

I am Japanese and I wonder this all the time. I hear the same thing all the time, how people just cannot tell Asians apart and they just assume that many are Chinese. I just base it on lack of knowledge and exposure. I do get more offended by the word, "Oriental". I have corrected people on the fact that, "Oriental", refers to food and inanimate objects (like Oriental rugs).

I don't. But maybe because of Chinese restaurants. My town has a kazillion chinese restaurants but very few Japanese, a couple of Korean & one Thai. Also China has such a huge population & probably the # of immigrants allowed are in proportion to their numbers.

because of the fact in the "previous days" they have been all informed that as quickly as a woman reached a "particular age" she ought to shrink her hair short, because of the fact long hair, except worn up in an incredible tidy chignon grew to become into very unattractive and "not the issue". a woman of a "particular age" grew to become into to seem "matronly" and "good" and long hair grew to become into somewhat suggestive, or sexual, something woman of a "particular age" ought to have given up as area of the getting older technique. IMO in any case. Society and style insisted all of them be permed interior an inch of their lives and corsetted, white gloved and asexual on the instant women folk do exactly what they desire, and short hair is way less perplexing to shelter, and it sounds as though youthful and fashionable IMO as long because it isnt a blue poodle puff on suitable of their heads - what are some hairdressers thinking whilst they do this to elderly women folk?
