I'm reminded of this song because today is Nov. 11 (Veterans' Day or Remembrance Day, depending on where you live). It's called 'The Band Played Waltzing Matilda', written by Eric Bogle, I believe. The version I've heard was recorded by Liam Clancy. It tells of a young Australian lad who loved to travel around his country with his backpack, til he joined the army and was sent with the other Aussies to Gallipoli. He was one of the few who returned. It's a very sad song, yet also hauntingly beautiful. It sums up the tragedy of war, which the young men thought would be such a great adventure.
