I totally disagree with Dobrinism, e.g. "secular humanism", for it is the dangerous root of amorality and apathy run rampant in our culture, because it does not promote accountability for one's own actions to a Higher Standard, but confines it to a level of mediocrity and commonality, neither above one's own potential, nor below. This was one of the prime tenets to Communism, where the "individual" is forsaken for the collective good, thus eventually producing a proletariat state of oppression where the individual is reduced to the most lowest common denominator, and thus is entirely dispensable. Hence, Hitler may have genocide 6 million Jews, but Lenin's Marxism genocide 60 million comrades.
Arthur Dobrin's secular humanism, like any Humanism, does not empower the individual, because healthy "competition" is nullified. Do you realize how ridiculous this notion really is? Imagine a football game, tennis match or even a Grand Prix where no one is permitted to win, and no losers are allowed to lose. It is the ultimate state of mediocrity. Under such conditions no genuine resolution or cutting edge innovation can be nurtured, nor thrive, only mediocre ideas, lackluster products, shortsighted leadership, and average surgeons. If you needed brain surgery in order to live, would you allow just an O.K. and mediocre neurological surgeon to operate on you, or would you want the very BEST? But in a Humanistic World there is NO BEST of anything, just mediocre doctors, technicians, experts, craftsmen, dentist, etc. Ultimately, a dismal culture is the outcome.

Look at the way we all react to this.
I donot know who Arthur dobrin is. Whoever, if he had said that for himself it would have been considered a good way to live. But, the moment Dobrin addresses others with these statements others will immediately resent it.
For all we know Dobrin must have been a good , nice person and must have expressed his thoughts loudly.Even the meanest person will not have anything against what Dobrin had to say. But one .... only one ... of the about must have rubbed the wrongway in everyone`s life . There goes our acceptance through the window.
For example, in my personal life if my experience is that of a friend who cheated me totally I am never able to overcome that, Dobrin or Jesus advising me!
If I were to comment on Dobrin I would say I will absorb what I think would suit me best.Possibly Dobrin ( may he rest in peace) expected only that.

I can agree with all but the first point. Dobrin is probably saying with regards to ethics that we shoudl try to live in harmony with each other and be happy.

It is a quote we all should read each day to remind us of important things in life.

We are all connected. We must treat the earth and others with respect.
Ditto for ourselves. We must not think we are better than others, because
we are all the same. Do the right thing.......................of course I agree. He's
absolutely right!

It happens almost every week, and sometimes more often: someone wants to know why we're not using MySQL as the RDBMS behind OpenACS. The ACS Classic team (ArsDigita) gets the same question over and over again on their Discussion Forums. If it's good enough for Slashdot, it must be good enough for OpenACS, right?
Wrong. This quick paper attempts to explain why MySQL is not just the wrong choice for OpenACS, but how it should never be used by any system that handles critical data.
