if you bought the tank in a store dont drill it chances are that it is tempered glass. if you drill it, it will shatter. if you know for a fact that it is not tempered glass then use a dremel with a diamond tip rock. also on the other tanks that are tempered its usually only the bottom glass that is so if your using it for a sump or overflow you can adjust your standpipe and drill in the back glass. i do it all the time in my 40 breeder tanks

It would be better to not drill the tank at all. Even if done correctly you create stress risers all around the hole and it may eventually crack out. You can build a sump into a corner with another piece of glass and accomplish the same goal. Even better would be to pump or siphon water into another outside sump instead of decreasing your tank space by 20%.

The drill bits are expensive...our local pet store has a guy that specializes in salt water and he has the right size bits and for a fee he will drill it for you.....

Is it worth the 80 bucks to buy the bit or t o pay the 20 bucks and have someone drill it for you.

You are working with tempered glass!!

Good luck

Drilling glass is not easy. You need a diamond drill bit, as well as lubrication to keep the bit cool. Eye protection is a must. The link below has special tips for aquarium drilling. Good luck with your project!

First be sure that it is glass not plexy-glass. Then go to a large hard wear store such as Lowes or Home Depot and get a special drill bit for the material you want to drill.

If your going to do this yourself, you need a diamond drill bit nothing else will work and you will crack glass.

take it or call a glass shop. If they break it they are libel for it. If you break it then you are s.o.l.
