Hotels serve a different purpose than motels, and as such, they are located in or near cities. The basic design of a motel differs significantly from hotels, where rooms face inward with doors opening to interior hallways. A guest might stay at a hotel for a week or longer on business or pleasure, and “extras” are expected. Hotels commonly offer Jacuzzis, gyms, pools, restaurants, room service, cable television, Internet connectivity, and other luxuries. Hotel parking lots are separate, and in many cases, the walk from the lot to the lobby can be a trek. Some hotels provided shuttle service.

While the average motel may not have the accoutrements found at hotels, it offers easy access, reasonable rates, and a less complicated experience. This makes a motel ideal for a night’s sleep as travelers make their way through the country’s less traveled roads to an ultimate destination. Some motels even feature individual cabins set among picturesque woods, perfect for a longer stay to get away from it all.

motel---initially to a single building of connected rooms whose doors face a parking lot and/or common area or a series of small cabins with common parking. Their creation was driven by increased driving distances on the United States highway system that allowed easy cross-country travel. The concept originated with the Motel Inn of San Luis Obispo, constructed in 1925 by Arthur Heinman. The motels are also found along highways in rural and urban areas across Canada.

hotel---------A hotel is an establishment that provides paid lodging, usually on a short-term basis. Hotels often provide a number of additional guest services such as a restaurant, a swimming pool or childcare. Some hotels have conference services and meeting rooms and encourage groups to hold conventions and meetings at their location.

Hotels differ from motels in that most motels have drive-up, exterior entrances to the rooms, while hotels tend to have interior entrances to the rooms, which may increase guests' safety and present a more upmarket image.

The difference between a motel and a Hotel is that:
A motel's living unit is accessed individually from the outside of the building; and in a hotel the living units are accessed from within the building.

A motel is a "motor hotel" designed so that your door opens to the outside, convenient to the parking space for your car. A hotel tends to have multiple floors and the doors of the rooms open to an inside corridor.

The H. LOL Motels were for motorists driving across the country. It was a cheap form of hotel. Hotels are much more lavish and come with a lot of services including a concierge.

There really is none. The term "motel" is derived from the term "motor hotel," which originally meant that the hotel provided parking (ca. 1950s). The term motel today generally is used for a "limited service" property (i.e., a hotel that provides a limited number of amenities and does not provide food service).

You can drive your car up near the door at a Motel. You have to park the car and carry your luggage inside the entrance, up the stairs or whatever at a Hotel.

Motels are "Motor Hotels" or "Motor Lodges" and are generally easilly accessed by being on the freeway or just off the freeway. They are not as nice as a general rule. Hotels are more likely to be off the beaten path but typically are nicer.
