You went snow skiing for 6 hours. You skied at an average rate of 30 miles per hour and the ski lift took you back up the hill at a rate of 10 miles per hour. If your overall average was 23 miles per hour, how many hours did you actually spend skiing?

it is not a trick question, i need to know how long you were actually skiing, not riding the lift.

X= hours spent skiing
Y= hours on ski lift

X+Y= 6 hours

(X*30mph) +(Y*10mph)= (6hours*23mph)
30X + 10Y=138 miles....................... (1)

Y= 6 - X substitute this for Y in equation 1

30X + 10(6-X) = 138 miles
30X + 60 - 10X= 138 miles
20X= 78 hours
X=3.9 hours
You spent 3.9 hours skiing or 3 hours and 54 min skiing

10/30=1/3
1/3 of your time is spent on the slopes so:
1/3X23=23/3=7.66 hours
