I try to be. I am one of the few on here who uses their real name. If more people did this (or were required to do this) there would be a lot less name calling.
What we see a lot on here is people, hiding behing a screen name, attacking the character of others based simply on their stated beliefs on one issue while ignoring the persons justification for their beliefs. I have done this, as have you. It is easier to attack someone you've never met than someone standing in front of you.
“The human being who would not harm you on an individual, face-to-face basis, who is charitable, civic-minded, loving and devout, will wound or kill you from behind a veil.” - Morton Mintz
Excellent question. I've often wondered about this myself.

See....most all of the people in my life have similar positions on religion, politics ETC. SO, when I get on here I get crazed!! I voice what I holler at the news, or what I want to say to some people I work with. On occasion I do call people Idiots, or morons or fascists butt plugs..If its true. No one I know, has any doubts about my feelings about GW. Of course, when I talk politics I am pretty passionate; maybe even a little to much so.
I'm much nicer outside of this Yahoo Answers that Im addicted too. I'm quite sure that I enjoy my own opinion too much : )

I consider myself as a voter who votes by issue and candidate, not by party affiliation, but I am normally a very nice person. I think what you get on here is what you would get from me in a face to face conversation. To answer your questions -
1 - no
2 - no
3 - if the shoe fits
4 - actually, more easily. Because I can see the body language that accompanies the statements.
5 - about the same - probably a little nicer in person in some ways, less so in others.
With anything, it depends on the issue. There are certain issues that get me on my soapbox and will get my blood pressure to rise.

The Democrats are practically socialists; the Republicans are closer to corporate fascists. Neither one offers anything but rhetoric.
The Republican Party is not now, never was and never will be a conservative party. It is what it has always been – a representative of the rich and of big business.
A true conservative recognizes that the Constitution is a binding contract that should be interpreted literally and in the context of the time at which it was written and ratified. A Constitution that means anything a judge says it means nothing.

Anonymity is a wonderful and terrible thing, isn't it? People feel free to voice their opinions and exchange ideas, which is wonderful. However, people also say things in a much harsher and more confrontational way than they would in person, or if they were identified.
Often I think people act like jerks just to get attention or to rile people up. Controversy is amusing to some people, but you can't take it too seriously and think badly of people in general. If everyone was really this awful in real life, our country would be a pretty sad place!

I am very nice, I just recognize the enemy known as liberalism and love to debate and show people the truth. A couple liberals I have known for years and have help them out with money or whatever don't even talk to me know except to write a hateful email or two. No big deal, because when you have a liberal friend who needs enemies!

RLP,
You are a good guy, trying to get both sides to get along. We should, really. You're taking the high road.
I think it's the anonymity and facelessness of online life that breeds this behavior. Because you're right, no one would act as we do in real life. There'd be too many black eyes!

Personally, for the most part, I think we are all nice people on here. Hey, who doesn't like a good arguement? What's rude is getting all the bad marks for stating your arguement. But what is that really, some sort of scoring? There's better scoring on "Who's Line is it Anyway?"
I think people like to get on here to blow off some steam plus sometimes its fun when you get someone all ryled up. Sometimes its a game of "Who Can You P*ss Off" and other times you just want to read all the crazy answers. It's like a virtual game in here.

People in general are more aggressive on the internet. It's easier to smart off to someone you'll never have to face. Some people don't have a problem with doing that in person too, but most of us are much nicer in person then we are on the internet.

I myself can't wait until the animal's and fruit's and vegetable's get to be just like us, self centered , then lets find out how nice we really are. That's right! We would all starve to death! Think about it the cow's out of one hundred percent of them, one third are gay and one third are going to have an abortion because it gets in the way of my future or it'll cover up my screw up. The other third are just---- well normal but caught up in life. The same goes also for the fruit's and vegetable's. GET THE PICTURE!!!! So what do you think of me now???
