Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium Model
Problems (Answer is supplied; you show the work.)

Remember that the letters refer to frequency of:
p = dominant allelesp2 = homozygous dominant trait
q = recessive alleles2pq = heterozygous trait
q2 = recessive trait

1. In a population of 500, how many homozygous dominant individuals are present if the recessive allele shows up at a frequency of 60%? Answer: 80

2. Suppose you have a population of guinea pigs in which 2/3 of the alleles for coat color specify black (dominant) and 1/3 specify white (recessive). What is the frequency of dominant and recessive traits, according to Hardy-Weinberg, in this population?
Answer: 44% and 11%, respectively

3. Of 400 people who dwell on a Pacific island, 16 are recessive for a trait that has only two different types of alleles in the population. What is the number of heterozygous people in the population? Answer: 128

4. In a population that is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, the frequency of the recessive genotype is 49%. What is the percentage of the population that is heterozygous?
Answer: 42%

5. If the frequency of the dominant allele in a population is 36%, what is the frequency of the recessive trait in that same population? Answer: 41%

1. In a population of 500, how many homozygous dominant individuals are present if the recessive allele shows up at a frequency of 60%? Answer: 80

q = 60%
q2 = .36
p = 1-q = 40%
p2 = .16%
.16 x 500 = 80

If you are cute I'll give you more answers

Edit: Heck, this is more fun that making fun of some of the retards at Yahoo Answers

2. Suppose you have a population of guinea pigs in which 2/3 of the alleles for coat color specify black (dominant) and 1/3 specify white (recessive). What is the frequency of dominant and recessive traits, according to Hardy-Weinberg, in this population?
Answer: 44% and 11%, respectively

p2 = 4/9 = 44%
q2 = 1/9 = 11%

Hey, I'm on a roll

Edit: What class are you taking?

3. Of 400 people who dwell on a Pacific island, 16 are recessive for a trait that has only two different types of alleles in the population. What is the number of heterozygous people in the population? Answer: 128

q2 = 16/400 = .04 q = 4/10 = 20%
p = 80% p2 = .64

pq = .16
2pq = 32% 400x32% = 128

Last edit: You have to beg if you want #5 also

4. In a population that is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, the frequency of the recessive genotype is 49%. What is the percentage of the population that is heterozygous?
Answer: 42%

q2 = 49%
q = .7
p = .3
p2 = 9%
2pq = 100% - 49% - 9% = 42%
