A stroke or loss of blood supply to the brain is also called a cerebrovascular accident or CVA. This interruption of the blood supply may be due to a thrombus, an embolus, or a hemorrhage. In the case of Kirk Douglas, he most likely had a stroke of the left hemisphere of his brain which caused partial paralysis of the right side of this body. Since it is believed that the left hemisphere is dominant in 97% of people regardless of handedness, and that the dominant hemisphere contains language centers, persons having a lesion in the left hemisphere are most likely to have communication problems. Mr. Douglas, in other words, had to learn to speak all over again with the help of a dedicated speech therapist. With the help of an occupational therapist and a physical therapist, he had to regain strength and coordination in his affected right arm, hand, and leg in order to do activities of daily living. This required months of hard work on a daily basis. And his therapy regime continues to this day--years after his stroke.
