Here is an honest and as open minded answer as I can give.
I love the beat and punchiness of rap, as well as the amazing lyrical rhythms.
However. The lyrics just seem to rot my soul.. ya know. Its all so very negative. Or so sexually stimulating that I can't keep my mind focused. I guess I'm talking about hard core gangsta rap. Some of the lighter stuff is not as depressing and degrading to women.

It depends on the lyrics
Some rap is good but when they start talking killing, looting and raping it gets bad. I'm not a big rap fan but I do like the stuff that's polished and professional meaning no murder death and baby momma raping involved in the lyrics....that stuff just plain stinks.
keep it positive and confidence building.... no need for the insane

No. They are entertainers & what entertains, excites or outrages people gets them noticed & sells records. And as with any music genre, when parents start paying a little more attention to their kids, their lives & what they are listening to, then maybe they can stop blaming music for all that is wrong with the world. Parents need to be the role models & stop pushing that responsibility off on celebrities. But that is another soap box...lol.

I never have liked it. Chances are I never will like it. It's not music that I feel like I can relate to. It's everyone's personal opinion though. Some people love it and hate the music that I listen to, that's cool.
All I know is that I'd rather have my eardrums stabbed out with Q-tips than listen to rap, but that's just my personal feeling :)

Not entirely. I do agree that most of the mainstream rap we see on TV and hear on the radio is garbage, but what most people who aren't familiar with hip hop in general don't realize is that mainstream stuff is only one dimension of the genre. Most of them base their opinions on the kind of rap that the mainstream media force feeds us day in and day out. I'm here to tell you that not all rap/hip hop emphasizes materialism, misogyny or is filled with profanity (i.e. - conscious rap, Christian rap, etc.). And contrary to popular belief, there are also many hip hop artists out there who have positive things to say, but unfortunately, you'll rarely (if ever) find any of them in the mainstream media. Greedy record companies and good ol' Corporate America saw that the more negative and/or controversial aspects of the music (violence, misogyny, money, etc.) resulted in record sales, so they took it and ran with it, shoving it in our faces and filling our ears with it every chance they get. So what do they do next? They condition the masses and flood the market with whatever "trend du jour" makes them the most money as opposed to actual talent, variety and substance. So all in all, there's still some good, quality hip hop music out there for those that bother to look for it, but you definitely won't find it in the mainstream.

Can't have Crap without Rap.
Think about it....the beat is just about the same for all rap music. The same over driven bass and percussion. Much of the language is profane, abusive and hateful.
Honestly, it doesn't even qualify as music.

Just to clarify, who's "they"?
Rap is just as bad or good as any other given genre, be it rock, pop, or chinsese throat singing.
If you want to know, listen for yourself. Don't just watch MTV (or BET's) top 10 list. If you like it, great. If not, thats fine too. There's not really one answer for this.

It's pretty influential...but no, it's not, it's just people who haven't really stepped outside too much that say it's bad. If you wanna hear something that's more violent than rap, listen to metal or rock (I ain't hatin on rock or metal tho...)
