The easiest way to answer this is to ask yourself,

"Would Donald Rumsfeld be gone if the Republicans had pulled an upset and retained control of both houses?"

In all honesty, I think he was getting tired. That's just my opinion based on my observations. The only way I would know for sure is to ask Rumsfeld myself. Since that isn't going to happen...I am assessing it was a combination of complications and ridicule that drove him to resign.
