i think there comes an age where "wisely and safely" means that you simply educate them not to share personal information or take people on the internet at face value. until you're confident they understand that, many websites have settings to protect kids. my 7-year-old plays club penguin with chat off, for example, so the only chat that can be exchanged are preset phrases in the game. for my older kids, i have a list of internet safety rules posted right next to the computer, which is on a desktop with a screen large enough that it can be seen by anybody in the room.
