My Dad is 90 years old. He often calls and would like help on minor computer software like excel, word, etc. I think I could resolve most of the problems if I could see his screen from my location. What ever software would be necessary probably would have to be installed on his computer also so I would like it to be as simple as possible. Have any ideas?

If he has access to the Internet (and of course what is failing is NOT his internet connection), you can try a website like www.logmein.com

This website offers remote control capability for a PC and as long as all you want to do is look at his screen or take control and type stuff, I believe it is free. There are other sites (for example www.GoToMyPC.com) but I am not sure if others offer this free connectivity.

Also, as another user indicated, there are built-in features in Windows XP that are designed to let you get help from other XP users, such as the Remote Assistance button.

FYI - I am not an employee of any of the companies mentioned nor do I recommend one over the other. I have used all three and found they all do a pretty good job. So it depends on cost and what you find easiest to use.

If you both run Windows XP, you could also use Remote Assistance.
It allows you to connect remotely to any other WinXP computer.

Have your dad go to Start> Help & Support, and then click on "Invite a friend to connect to yout computer with Remote Assistance" (It's to the right. Then, he'll have to type in your e-mail address in the box provided.

Then he'll be asked to type a message, which is not required.
He'll then have to specify how long the invitation will last (up to 30 days), and he should enter a password that he will then communicate to you.

You'll then recieve an e-mail with the invitation attached, and some instructions.

If that's too complicated, you could install a free program like LogMeIn.

Great question by the way. If you both use Microsoft Windows XP Home or Professional, there's a function called "Whiteboard" that allows us to request help from another XP user. We use this function to repair computers now while online which cuts down the price of repairing machines. My advice to you would be to go to your "Start" menu,,then click on Help. Then pull up the "index" and type in the word whiteboard. Read, read, and then read some more until you feel comfortable with the proceedure. It will also make it easier for you to explain to him what he needs to do to allow you into his machine. He'll have the ability to limit your time inside or not. Larry Radio Shack

The easiest way I found to do this remote linking you and your father both will have to set up MSN messenger accounts. MSN messenger allows for remote linking to other person's computer. The program you want in messenger is called remote assistance. It allows you to link and take full control of your father's computer. You can manipulate his computer and see exactly what's on his screen
