I have a hewlett packard all in one T series if that helps. My black ink cartrige is fine, but my mother was told that if you replace on cartrige, you have to replace the other (like batteries I guess). Is this true?

If there's nothing wrong with the black cartridge, you don't have to change it. The cartridges are totally separate from one another, which is why one can run out long before the other one does.

If one cartridge has dried out, the other is right behind. Replace them both to prevent clogging later on. An Ounce of Prevention is worth a Pound of Cure. Larry Radioshack 01-9590
