Depends on the type of painkiller. I assume you don't mean Tylenol, aspirin, Advil, Aleve,etc.....NSAIDS

I assume you do mean opiate analgesics such as Lortab or Percocet. The xanax would probably add to the sedating effects of opiate analgesics. Basically, any medicine with sedating side effects might add to another medicine with sedating side effects.
