I had the exact same problem with my 2004 Grand Am radio. Then one day the lights came back on. However, from that point on my cd player won't play. Coincidence, maybe, but I will get a new radio installed before I spend any money to get the radio/ cd player fixed.

First make sure that your dimmer for the dash lights isn't turned down. This turns down the radio display also on some vehicles. If it's not that, then the radio is the problem. A dealer probably won't be able to fix the problem right there on the spot. They would either have to send your radio out for repairs, or sell you an exchage unit. May be 200 or 300 dollars to fix.

The radio will have to be removed and repaired by an authorized repair station. If you are out of warranty, ask the dealer (Service Manager) if he could help you out. Be very nice, polite and take lots of cookies. He doesn't have to; but, if you have been a good customer he will.
If that fails, it is not hard to remove the radio. Ask the Service Manager who the authorized repair station is and get the phone number. Call them for repair price, if it suits you send it to them. They will probably send a repaired radio off their shelf back to you.
Last resort, carry a bright flashlight with you. When you want to see what is on the display shine the light on it and there it is; sorta, kinda.

Unless you have the lights on, and the dash lights turned down, you may need to have the radio repaired.
I don't remember if those had a bulb inside the radio or use LEDs.
I'm sure your local Pontiac dealer could fix it.

If I remember right, that is a back lit display on the radio. Chances are the light source has failed. It may be replaceable, ask at the dealer.

And if it's LED it's overpriced for what you think they would charge. Call a salvage/pull a part place and see if they have any models of those possibly. That might be more cost effective if it still works and someone or stereo place can install. They usually charge less than a dealer.
