My nineteen year old sister wrecked a car today and is in a lot of trouble for not having insurance. Someone told her that if she gets insurance on another car and brings it to court with her when she goes that the judge may not revoke her license, but will only give her a fine. She can't afford to buy a car. I'm getting a car in January, and my husband has a car of his own. My mom is very ill and upset about my sister being in so much trouble, and my OTHER sister mentioned to me that maybe I could sign my van over to my sister so she can get it insured and share my husband's car with him until January. I don't want to do this. I feel like my sister needs to learn from her mistakes just like I had to do and if I put my neck out to help her, I'll wind up with a broken neck and a still immature sister? Am I wrong for thinking this? Would I be a better sister and daughter to give up my van??

It's NOT illegal. We aren't trying to falsify insurance for the date of the accident. The person that they spoke to said that if I were to do this and she were to get insurance on my van it would be a good way for her to show that she was trying to straighten out her act.

Before you know you’re an accomplice for trying to help. Who's gonna help who then?

I can't see how lying to the judge is going to help -- they will check when the insurance was issued, and know it was after the accident, won't they? The car in the accident report and the van on the insurance sheet won't match either. She'll be in even more trouble.

But, if they have great reasons why it will work, you could "sign" over the van, but not let your sister use it. She can just use the paperwork. Neither of you will be able to use the van, though. Because then you won't have insurance. But, you will help her out of the mess. Sometimes families have to do that.

How long will the license be revoked? Does your sister need the car for her job, or to help your mom get around? Are you willing to do the driving for her (and your mom, if necessary)? There are more ways to help than doing something illegal. I have a bad feeling about this. Wouldn't your mom be more upset to have two daughters in trouble with the law?

Figure out some way to help which doesn't involve something illegal. If your sister wants to make the choice to do something illegal, you are still a good sister and daughter if you refuse to go along. She can do illegal stuff by herself. But, she *IS* family, so stick your neck out -- legally!

No, don't do it. The judge will still see that she didn't have insurance when it happened. Besides, the car she was driving has to be insured. And when someone looks up a policy they will see the date AND TIME it took effect. I know because I tried to get insurance right after an accident but the time on the policy was after the time on the accident report.

You are absolutely right. I got hit by someone who didn't have insurance and I had to file it on my own collision insurance since I don't have uninsured motorist on my policy. That means I had to pay a 500.00 deductible and 370.00 for a rental car that also wasn't covered. Then just this week I found out they missed an impact to the bottom of my transmission (I jumped a curb at 20 mph after she hit me) so now my transmission is totally screwed and it's another 300.00 for a rental car out of my pocket while they fix it and the total damage the insurance will pay for is over 5000.00. So I'm sure my rates will get jacked up in a hurry. All this for something that was in no way my fault.

Uninsured motorists really piss me off now. Your sister needs to learn her lesson and pay the piper on this one because she could cause an innocent person like me to lose a whole bunch of money for something that isn't their fault. I can't imagine if I'd have been injured and ended up with thousands of dollars in hospital bills I couldn't pay for.

And you are right about the broken neck thing because if she learns that someone is always there to bail her out when she screws up the only thing she'll learn is that it's ok to screw up. Be strong and know you are doing the right thing for yourself and for her.

NO, you are being the responsible one. Stick to your guns. If your other sister wants let her do something but the 19 year old will thank you in years to come. If you have anything of value or ever plan to, & your sister is on your insurance, they can take your house, garnish your salary or prevent you from ever getting a home. I know from experience, it will follow you for years if she's on your insurance & she gets in an accident especially if she was wreckless.

She is 19 and I'm sure knows you must have insurance. Helping family is great, but at some point she'll have to grow up. The question is are you willing to risk you only transportation to see if she'll grow up?

emmm...your sister maybe now really in mess up condition...she maybe stress right now..and you think your sister should learn a lesson from this situation..it's quite true although but can you think just a second where is your sister when you really need her...this is not a problem to think are you will be a good sister you are born to be a her sister so if your memory with your sister is good enough....now you can decide should you leave her with her own problem or you give up your van...you decide...

Let her deal with it. She wanted a vehicle she should have been responsible enough. I bet next time she will get insurance!
