Well I used to let them sit in a lil' amonia (outside the house of course !) so it'll loosen all the oils etc. and then boil them for a little while in a pot big, oh and I also used tongs to grag them out the pot when the strings look clean enough use the tongs to take them out, rinse them off and dry them real good, then slap them back on (which can be tricky sometimes, had slippage problems but hey I'm no Tech...) and ya got punch again for a lil' while

1) Take a pot large enough to fit your strings (coiling OK) and fill with water.
2) Heat till water boils.
3) Boil until all crud is removed from strings.

PS: Easier to just get new strings...
