The shackle for my leaf spring rusted away on my 96 Ford Explorer (thanks road salt!). Now the spring is resting on the frame and I can't get the frame high enough to get seperation. I already had to cut out the old shackle bolts with my angle grinder. The bolts connecting the u-bolt are rusted firmly in place. Tried WD-40 and others to release. Isn't going to happen. Any help?

I don't need to remove the u-bolts, just added that in there to show I thought of removing them. I'll try going higher and see what happens. I'll use some 6x6 blocks I have. Thanks.

Also, the shackle wasn't there, it completely rusted away. The frame rests on the unshackled end of the spring regardless of how high it is off the ground (or even on the ground). I'll try higher.

Also, I hope to not have to replace the u-bolts.

If you can get a small jack between the frame and the axle near the back side of the rear axle you can jack it apart to do the repairs, you already have the hardest part done, removing the old shackel. Please make sure you have the vehicle on some sort of stand, don't want to hear about you hurting yourself.e-mail me if you need more info.

be careful but use some blocks to raise it higher to get seperation. Next ...cutting torch and new u bolts for the installation. The U bolts are torqued to spec in order to stretch the thread so prevent the bolts from coming loose. Always use new U bolts in doing this.

Simply put...cut the old u bolts and replace them..If you need more lift to seperate the springs from the frame...then use blocks but be safe.

did you jack the back end of your car up before you did all that if you do when you cut the shackle your truck bed should raise up off the frame, those U bolt cut them off and replace with new one.
