reason i ask, is i have a new 3.5 horse johnson i use on my scull boat for duck hunting...where i go, there is a lot of algea, duck weed, etc, and it gets sucked into my intake screens often..i have to stop the boat, pull the motor, and clean the screens..i see guys in the area with larger boats and motors and never see them having problems,,,i am looking at the yamaha motor but don't want the same problems..does it have something to do with the horsepower, ..the larger boats go where i do, so what can it be.?

A Yamaha exclusive is that their water intake inlets are facing more to forward , like a scoop, rather than the traditional opposed side inlets. Larger engines have poppet valves or special thermostats that restrict water from leaving the engine to aid in cooling at idle. Algae and duck weed have been the demise of many a outboard engine clogging everything from inlet passages to poppet valves regardless of hp. Short of paddles, trolling motors and air cooled engines, the only thing I can suggest is to buy a Tohatsu. Did you see how I worked that in there? Hope this helps.

Yamaha engines have very small diameter cooling discharge lines and are prone under even normal operation to calcify up and have to be cleaned on a regular basis. No matter what engine you have you will still get the same problems operating the engine in the conditions you are. The guys with the bigger engines may not have problems as regular as you but I can assure you they will long term. In your case the best advice is to buy a set of fresh water muffs and flush your engine after use because your problem (and the big guys) will eventually end up at the thermostat.

have you looked into the boat catalogs they offer a device that is made to keep weeds and debrie out away from you prop and lower unit (water intake) ..... try Overtons.com or their phone # 1-800-334-6541 I have also seen this item in Bass Pro
.... it connects to the cavitation plate v's to the front of lower unit then connects to the skeg... it also works well in areas where you may hit bottom.... I also agree with flushing you motor after use with the fresh water muffs or using a barrel works too...

+ yes the Yamaha is known to have this problem. A fresh water flush is even recommended in the manufacturers tech manual.
