There are two parts of the glow plug system, that normally fail, which would cause the light to "come on " while driving. The "most probable" is, one or more of the six glow plugs has failed/burnt heating element. The other cause would be the system glow plug "relay". An experienced Mercedes diesel tech can "check" and verify the problem. Good luck!

certain year glow plug relays will blink a code for both the 5 and 6 cyl diesels if yours is blinking replace the glow plug for the corresponding #of blinks [dead plug] if it stays on steady, one or more of the glow plugs is shorted this can be tested with a amp meter after disconnecting large connector from glow unit . with cold engine each plug individually should draw 20 amps initially and drop to approx 12-14 amps in about 20 seconds [the tiny numbers on the connector correspond to cylinder position] while you are at the control relay [left inner fender below and in front of A.B.S. unit] inspect the fuse for corrosion and replace as required note be patient when replacing glow plugs, use a back and forth motion and lots of pb blaster and wd 40 as you unscrew glow plugs. 123 and 126 bodies still rule and are the best sedans Mercedes ever built.
