Try the link below. There are some great ideas out there and you can use whatever paint you like. You can used automotive paint, Krylon, etc. I prefer lacquer because it dries fast and is better suited for playing. Enamel stays soft too long and absorbs sound but is still great if you let it dry long enough. Try Stewart-McDonald for some refinishing stuff. There are so many options out there it isn't funny. I have even seen an Ibanez sold that is covered with duct tape and sprayed with some sort of coating and it is awesome. I like the aluminum diamond plate pickguards that set things off. There is some killer hardware like skull knobs, etc. Lots of possiblilities. When refinishing you have to prep things well. Some of these Asian made jobs have fullerplast as their base coat and it will not come off with regular stripper. If you want to remove it you have to use a special solvent or hand sand it. It is better to start with the guitar stripped all the way down to the wood and begin the whole process from scratch. If you want to hear the wood use less lacquer and/or enamel etc. Alot of possiblities depend on what you have after you strip the guitar. Laminated plywood won't be worth more expensive finishes as opposed to a nice wood guitar body. If it is really nice wood underneath you can even use stuff like tung oil or rub on finishes. Lots of ways to go.
