I'm making a trip north soon and will be renting a car. I'm concerned about driving over the mountain passes, should I just get some of my own chains?

Some do. The ones up north where there is bad weather all winter. You need to check with the agency you are renting to rent from.

*sigh* nobody gives straight answers. Snow "chains" or other add-on traction devices are perfectly safe with traction control. You can find it at any decent auto parts or tire store. Just ask for it by name "snow chains". They'll ask you for approximate tire size, and hand you a kit with instructions. Put them on the "drive" tires (FWD or RWD). If it's AWD, the rear is probably better. Remember those are temporary use, and dedicated snow tires are better if you will be doing a lot of driving in winter. The only problem is, of course, you'll need another set of rims.

no i don't think the rental agency will provide snow tires unless they came with the car, that is an ideal for you to have insurance if you wreck they car they don't have nothing to loose but you.
