my 1985 BMW 325e has 347494 on it right now, still the original engine and trans, everything still works great.
I am the original owner and drives like a champ! I use it almost everyday to commute to work.

P.S I have used nothing but Mobil 1 synthetic oil since 1986 and when I pull the valve cover to adjust the valves, it still looks brand new. The inside of my engine is cleaner than the outside of the engine compartment

The longer they last, the harder it is to provide an independent verification of mileage. Volvo used to boast a few owners with a million miles but nobody could verify that independently. I think that's possible assuming you change the oil every 500 miles and drive only on the highway. Assuming the oil is always fresh, the weak points are generally the head gasket and valves. Give it a valve job every 200,000 miles or so depending on the design, then the next weakest point is the connecting rod bearings unless it is always running and not subject to cold starts. The next weakest point depends on the engine design.

I have seen taxi's that have gone around the clock twice. I live in Australia so it is in kilometers instead of miles but it is still over a million miles. Also when BMW were testing their straight six a few years ago they ran one a million kms on a single dose of oil. Mobile 1 synthetic if anybody is interested.
