Bush has tried too hard to move to the middle and it backfired on him. If Republicans are smart they will return to the Reagan conservatism that worked before. Republican voters are pissed off that Republicans are more like moderate Dems than like Republicans. It's time to get back to the true Republican platform - or else the liberal Republicans need to change parties. Dems will run on a conservative platform and then once elected, pursue their liberal agendas. Hide and watch - it worked for Lieberman...he WAS an 'independent' when he ran - but he has already said that we should consider him a Dem. What a sellout, but no surprises there....

What I feel they will do is if it looks like George is vetoing legislation, just to rub the Dems' noses in it (which looks bad on the GOP), they may align with the Dems on certain issues to distance themselves from a petulant president

I doubt it. It wasn't the president that lost this for them, it was their own failure to be Republicans and they know it. Cut spending and they'll be OK.
