Yeah. Quite a project. Plans were available in those days in Do-It-Yourself books and magazines at the grocery store. Some were simple boxes; others more complicated.
The biggest things to keep in mind:
1. You want the music, not the sound of the speaker housing coming apart. Do quality woodworking, use good joints and glue not overlap and nail.
2. Acoustics are vibration. To get clean sound, the vibrating part must be anchored to something solid and stable. The question is: vibrate against what? It's called the acoustic base.
3. If you can't anchor to solid mass, isolate the vibrating part from the frame or box.
4. Use good components.

Unless you have a manufacturing plant, good luck.
Do you know what size magnet you will need? How many wraps and what size wire to use? What impedence will it be?
The type and size of material to use?
I have built many things from parts, radios, computers, etc.
But the thought of making my own speakers wouldn't enter my head.

yes, built many for my son, make sure box is big enough and tight and seal properly all edges.....this is critical! also wire speakers to lowest OHMs for your buck....to gain higher wattage output... wire speakers in many ways, series or parallel or a combo of both....to gain lowest ohms..
