Definitely without. I attended a college without sororities and fraternities, and I have taught at a number of universities both with and without.

At the colleges with fraternities, people are much more conformist, and tend to place too much emphasis on partying, outward appearances, and the (questionable) value of "who you know" rather than "what you know." Despite the fact that fraternities and sororities do volunteer work, they mostly serve purely social functions. Sororities and fraternities are also inherently classist, since poorer students cannot afford to belong.

Colleges without fraternities and sororities have greater social freedoms, and students with dissimilar backgrounds tend to congregate more, and learn from one another more. Students at hese sorts of schools tend to value "what you know" rather than "who you know."

I personally think college is better with sororities and fraternities. It is more than just a "clique." If you are in one, then you would understand that there is a deep bond among all the sisters/brothers in the group. Plus, they do a lot of community service and volunteer work. And in most sororities and fraternities, you have to maintain a certain GPA, which is usually a B average. There are lots of advantages to them. If you don't like them, then you always have the choice of not participating.

By the way, I was NOT in a sorority but I knew many people who were and I wish I had joined. I realized it my junior year of college and I still regret it. I had many close friends in those organizations and after I started learning how the greek organizations really were and what they stood for, I wanted to go through recruitment.

It is a personal choice.

I was in Fraternity. I can tell you it is all a matter of who you are. If you like being around people at all times and drinking, that is your place, but if not, just forget it. Some people think Fraternities and Sororities segregate, but the opposite is true. The non-greek campus tends to reject the greek side for no good reason.

Oh, and no, there are no GPA requirements for social fraternities and sororities, but they do tend to have decent GPA's usually at the school level or above.

without. THere's no need for such stupidity and cliques. College is about education and yes building friendships and social networks. But needing to be "accepted" into a group and pledging is ridiculous. Live on campus, get a roommate, attend some parties, learn a bunch... but frats and sororities shouldn't exist anymore.

Anything that distracts from education & research is a net minus. Thus colleges are better without.
