I remember standing in line to go see Star Wars in 1977. I was 7 years old. The line went out the front of the mall and down the block. I loved that movie and most of the franchise. Not to slight George Lucas in any way, but some of the Star Wars movies fell flat for me. Some plot points seemed contrived in Phantom Menace and in Attack of the Clones. An example is a ten-year old Anakin accidentally destroying a star destroyer and building C3PO-this was just too out there for me. I did love that Sith brought everything together and it is my favorite of the new group. As for the originals, I prefer Empire, Star Wars and Jedi in that order. I didn't like a lot that went on in Jedi. Han was made to be the butt of the joke on more than one occasion.
Lord of the Rings was very well done and had an excellent basis in literature. The casting was superb and the locations were perfect. Continuity was not a problem at all. The special effects were phenominal, too! My only problem with that trilogy was the romance between Arwen and Aragorn. It showed up in an appendix of the last book and was only placed in the movies to grab female viewers, in my opinion.
With all that being said, I think I prefer LOTR. But I really think that they are more than equal if you condsider what each brought to the screen. Plus, if George Lucas had not created Industrial Light and Magic, LOTR would have been up a creek without a paddle. George innovated so many things that others have been able to build upon. Even Peter jackson gives his props to Star Wars and its influence on him.

Apples and Oranges.
They are both Myths, both Epics and both the beginnings of new genres. Star Wars started major science fiction movies being okay by studio's for the first time ever. The film was released on May 25, 1977 and produced with a budget of $11 million.
Lord of the Rings is responsible for Dungeons and Dragons and that form of todays entertainment. Its been around for over 50 years and our grandparents read it. Its about ancient races and the new emerging ones. It cost around $200 million dollars and had a cast of 1,000's, literally.
The Lord of the Ring overwhelms you while Star Wars fascinates you.

Lord of the Rings in my opinion. I went to see all three and loved them all. I liked Star Wars and The Return of the Jedi but I can't say I liked all of the Star Wars movies...
