It all matters what you use. If you have dial-up or DSL, I recommend upgrading to Comcast Digital Cable. If you have that already, then consider the following:
If you have a wireless connection, not only do you have to check the modem, but check the wireless adapter as well. It might not be connected properly.
If you need to check the modem, check that it is on, that it is both sending and receiving, check that it is online, and, if you also have problems with wireless, check that it is sending a wireless signal.
Also, you might want to check your cable. We had a bad cable for years, and our Internet crept like a snail. Once, Comcast came over to check something, and they decided, just for the heck of it, to check the main cable. It was garbage quality!!! They ripped it out and put it a brand new one, and now, our interned is FAST!!!
Anyway, just check all of those things. Also, I've heard of a new service called something-DSL. It is faster and cheaper than cable, plus they wire up your whole house, so you don't need a modem or any wireless stuff. Check it out on Google! Hope this helps!

How do you connect? (dial up, broadband, are you connecting directly through a modem or do you have a router. Are you using wireless? What are you doing on-line (playing games, downloading, watching streaming video)? Are you willing to spend a little cash to fix this problem?
Sorry I'm not providing answers but you'll have to be more specific. There's allot to telecommunications.
I'll give you a real answer but I need more information?

Without any info on what you're using now as your internet server and the computer that you have, it's almost impossible to answer that question. You could purchase a faster computer, add more SDram Memory, pay for a faster internet service like Cable or DSL, purchase a faster Router, ...on and on and on. Happy to help if I can.
