okay heres the deal. My guppy is pregnant and I am going to get probably somewhere from 10-20 gal tank to keep hte guppys in as they grow. I want to be able to cycle it so the babys wont be the first ones in there. I want to put a some other fish(because the adult guppys would eat the fry) to cycle it but I want to be able to keep it in with the fry. What fish wont eat the fry and how long do they need to be in there before it is cycled enough for the fry to go in.(i will probably just use the breeding net at first but the seperate tank would be for as the grow but arnt large enough to be in twith the parents)

Do a fishless cycle...see http://www.fishcrazy.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=10893.0
While you are cycling the tank the fry will live quite happily in a hatchery within the main tank. this is where all my fry spend the first month or so of their lives, then they get moved on to a 15 litre fry tanjk before finally going into the adult tank when they are big enough.

Any fish bigger than the fry would probably eat it, but less chance with a vegetarian fish such as a pleco or a golden ot. Just put plenty of plants which will enable the fry to hide. As for cycling, well, good suggestion has been mentioned.. no need to cycle, just use some of your old filter medium. There are commercial products such as Hagen Cycle or others containing "live" bacteria which will speed up the process. If it's just a guppy which is going to give birth to some fry then it won't matter too much as it won't overload the filter. Feed a little fishfood and the filter will mature normally.

I truthfully have had solid success with a Kribensis Cichlid in guppy tanks. They dont get very enormous or agressive and could regularly act like a Troll decrease than a bridge, only darting out for foodstuff. they might get agressive in case you get a pair, yet only one would be somewhat shy. they tend to hold out and hunt around the backside of the tank the place guppy fry decide to conceal. Seperating the sexes wont artwork now because of the fact the girls will nonetheless have numerous greater batches (100s greater fry). Ian

Plecos do not generally do well in brackish water.

As for the other fish, I wouldnt recommend AY to go with the fry. if you want to cycle the tank, I've dropped a shrimp in(just your average shrimp) and let it decay. this allows the production of a healthy bacteria system to grow. I would recommend it for your situation.

You don't need to add any fish to your new tank to cycle it! Take the 'dirty' filter off your existing tank and 'swish' it through the new tanks water to add *lots* of beneficial bacteria etc to start the cycle on your new tank! Look through the forums on the site listed below for more information on this and your guppies!

Oh, congratulations on your new 'parenthood'!
