It has to be the 70's, you still had all of the greatest bands playing or starting, then when rock seemed to be at an unsurpassable climax, The Ramones became the first punk rock band, The Damned released the first punk rock single and album, the Sex Pistols rocked the whole world with their music and antics, and the Clash made the best album ever (self titled) and two more of the greatest albums ever. Then the 80's happened and mainstream music turned into mindless pop, then eventually to even more mindless and less entertaing rap, with a few diamonds in the rough along the way.

What do you think?

To one of the answers that said there was more too it than punk rock, yes, there really was. That was just my favorite. I love classic rock, don't get me wrong, I just love early punk rock a little more. I meant that the 70's over all were great and it came to a head with the punk movement then died out.

I do agree if we put the 70's as a best years for music. We can say that the 70's music is a milestone for the music after that. All in the 70's are really amazing for the development of the music, we will find punk, pop, blues or everything even world music are started to reach all the ears of the musiclovers around the globe. If we talked about the 70's music than we have to say about the 60's music. The 70's music is really reflected the 60's music, even yes there are so many bands or artist which bring some brand new stuff to the world of music in these years, but in generally the 70's music is not much more different than 60's music.
But the new music is really started at the beginning of 80's. in this era the music is really exploded the world. So many bands or artist that develop so many new stuff to the world, let say heavy metal in this era we will find the NWOBHM - new wave of british heavy metal, or new wave - the really awesome music that invented at the 80's.
So i prefer to say that the best year is 80's music.

There was more to the 70's then just Punk rock. There was some very good mainstream rock. Alot of singer/songwriters. Some of the best music ever came out of the 70's and sad to say alot of it was not punk rock, that was a small sliver of the time.

I realize this is more of a century rather than decade, but I think it had to have been the Classical era (1750-1825). This is probably the case because with just Mozart and Schubert combined, about 1200 songs were written! Not to mention that Beethoven began to compose near the end of this era, bringing in nearly 100 more.

anything before heavy metal and rap! In the 60's 70's and 80's you could understand the music, dance to the music, listen to the music and relate to the music. Not anymore!! (except for country)

I gotta go with the 70's also, but mostly because of the Disco. People make fun of disco music, but that was a fun time and alot of itmade you want to dance and that's it. There were so many classic disco tunes that everybody knows.

I can't be specific. I like the time of The Stooges/MC5 and the time of "punk" like the Ramones and hardcore like Black Flag.
