If your computer has XP, is "always on" or can "wake up on command", (some can and some can't), and has a modem; why not use the FAX software that comes with XP and save the money?

You can get a free efax number if you look. It just won't be a number that is local to you. It's the same service as their paid service, only you are limited to the number of faxes you can send and receive. For people sending you a fax it will probably be a long distance call, if they're local to you. With that said, I've had a free efax number for many years and when I've had people send me faxes, it has always worked perfectly. They do make you install their client software for a free account, which includes advertisements, but it's not a big deal. It sits in your tray and you can always close it if you want to.
