My 1998 automatic Olds van suddenly would not go into park so I put it in nuetral to turn the engine off and now it wont start. Had the battery jumped and the tow truck driver said the battery seems fine but the van still wont start.

try putting it in nuetral to start it. The shifter in your van is attached to a cable that goes to the transmission. The cables have a long plastic tube at the transmission end. This plastic breaks some times and when you try to shift back up to park you are pushing the cable thru the tube.If the tube breaks the cable will bend like spaghetti.you can see the cable. It is under the hood on the drivers side sort of below your brake master cylinder.it is black. if you look while some one else moves the shifter you will find it quickly.

Sound like you just need a cable adjustment on the shifter. Something may have dropped into the area or has just become worn over time from going back and forth. Take it to a GM dealer. ANY GM dealer, and let them look at it, unless you have your own mechanic.

The switch that keeps you from starting the engine while in gear might be adjusted right for park, but not for neutral.
Not being able to shift to park is probably shift linkage problems.

all auto trans have a switch that prevents the auto from starting in gear.
check your manual for the location and make sure that the shift lever moves it
it is usually a simple adjustment, but it could be a broken switch or cable.not hard to fix and not very expensive unless you get an unscrupulous mechanic to work on it.

Hold the key in the start position and then move the shifter until it starts. You might not be able to turn the key in any other position on that year. I'm not sure when they changed that.
