In a capitalist economy, productive workers are rewarded with higher wages. How about in a communist economy?

Any concise reference for me?

Absolutly not,

One of the main problems with communism (aside from corupt leadership and inability of the govt to keep up with market trends) is that labor does not have incentive to improve itself. Due to lack of competition companies do not have the incentive to have a superior workforce. When this occurs those companies don't want (or need) to pay more to the labor.

No. Certainly workers can be rewarded if the leaders so choose, but there's no market check and balance to keep the leaders honest.

Likewise, in a capitalist economy managers can choose to not reward their productive workers and often do. However, there's a much better chance of the market working against such managers in capitalism. The productive workers have options, so they can seek opportunity where they are rewarded. Eventually, if the managers want to keep the good workers they have to figure out how reward them or else lose the talent.

In 1935 a coal miner called Alexei Stakhanov was reported to have dug 102 tons of coal in a single 6-hour shift. This was many times more than a miner was expected to cut. Stakhanov was rewarded and praised as an example to all other workers. The public were not told that Stakhanov had two co-workers, plus machinery in perfect working order, to help him achieve so much.

Russians were told to model themselves on Stakhanov. They rose to the challenge in what became known as the Stakhanovite Movement. Stakhanovites tried to perform feats of great productivity, through working harder and also through reorganising the way things were done in their place of work. They were rewarded with better pay and also lots of praise and publicity. This was just one way in which Stalin attempted to persuade his new industrial labourers to work more efficiently.
