G'day bb,

Thank you for your question.

There are tsunami warning systems in place consisting of sensors to detect a tsunami and communications to warn those in harms way. A warning system has been in place since 1967 in the Pacific.

Unfortunately, a similar system wasn't put in place in the Indian Ocean until after the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004 with moves now being made to set up such a system. No system can help if the earthquake causing the tsunami occurs just offshore as in the Hokkaido tsunami of 1993 when the tsunami hit no more than five minutes after the earthquake

I have attached sources for your reference.

Regards

The devices to measure seismic activities works fine but when comes to a tsunami things are different, these readers are connected to a submerged sensor but apparently don't work too good because you see the last tsunami, how many people die?..they found out there was a tsunami in progress the day after the tsunami struck, so they are not effective at all..☺

Monitor devices called Sonobouys are placed on the bottom of the ocean. The sonobouy transmits seismic activity to receiving stations.
