I thought I'd seen the most scariest movie when I saw The First Power (an 80's movie), but the Grudge took the lead. However, House of a 1000 corpse is very morbid & that sort of thing could be real, so to me those type movies are scary just for that reason.

Usually anything based on a true story is the scariest. Because the real monsters are our own kind, not imaginary beasts from planet Fangor nor a mutant grown in some radioactive experiment, nor some faked murderers wearing masks.
The real mass murderers, the real serial killers, etc.., again, are the real horrors, the real life monsters.

As a child,It's a tie between "Christine" and "IT"; between the car and the clown in these movies, I thought I would never sleep again!
Now, the last scary movie that kinda got me was GOTHIKA! I was not prepared for some of the stuff that happened in that movie!
The ring, Saw, the grudge etc really dont scare me, because while the special effects are awesome, it is not realistic.

The orginal version of Salems Lot with David Soul. I still have trouble watching that movie as an adult today.

And Freddy in general was just creepy.
