How can I be a neater person? That's not to say that I am just wretchedly slothful, I just have problems being consistent. How can I maintain a neat, organized home?

Go through your closets and drawers and get rid of as many things as possible that you don't use or need anymore. Once you clear the clutter then you have to organize the stuff you own. Make sure you have plenty of places to store your stuff (ie., enough racks in the closet, shelves, bins, filing drawers/boxes). Be consistent and organize according to how often you use the stuff...ie, keep your work clothes at one end of the closet and your leasure clothes at the other end so you can quickly hang stuff up and the find it again when you are in a hurry.

The best way I have found to keep my place neat is to be a minimalist. That means not a lot of furniture or knick nacks around the house and just the right amount of kitchen and bathroom equipment/supplies - no more or no less. Buy only stuff you need and use and only store total necessities like toilet paper and soap and non-perishable food items. I only buy fresh meat and produce if I'm going to use it the same day or the day after. The only produce I store for longer periods (say a week or two) is onions and garlic and maybe potatoes if you like those.

If you don't have a lot of stuff, than it's almost impossible to make a mess. If I find I no longer need an item, whether it be clothes, home decor, or kitchen items, I take it to good will. That way I know my stuff isn't completly going to waste.

The bonus to being a minimalist person is that you also save a lot of money. That's because you don't buy a lot of stuff you won't need.

Good luck!

If its just you. When you lay something down pick it up when done with it. If you dirty it then clean it..There is a long list and right now I am sorry I don`t have the list! But if you start with your rooms one at a time. If you haven`t used something in over 1 year get rid of it to charity, friends or put it out on the curb someone will pick it up before morning. The same goes for everyroom and you should be pretty organiized when you get thru so I would start with the living and dining rooms, kitchen, bathrooms. They are the main rooms ppl see and then go to your bedrooms later! Good Luck and I know this will work for you!!

A chart is a good idea. And so is not putting tasks off until later: If you do them right away, you won't forget them.

Make it a habit to do some things right when you get up: Habits help.

Another thing I've found helpful is to keep 2 diluted spray bottles of Lysol: One in the kitchen and the other in the bath. That way I don't have to hunt for cleaning supplies. And I take a cleaning rag with me to the bathroom in the mornings so I can just spray and wipe down the sink and vanity top when I'm done.

Wash dishes immediately after you get done eating: That way the food won't have a chance to hard-dry.

If you need to do laundry, start it THEN take care of your other chores while the machine is running.

Have a place for everything, and keep everything in its place. The rest is much easier afterwards.

Good luck!

Try this for thought: My elderly neighbor told me that the secret to a neat, organized home was to keep the house on a day to day basis as if you had company coming over and that you'd pick up and find ways to stay on top of things it you thought that everyday...

Try not putting things off until later. Use small containers to store small stuff in. Fold towels as soon as they dry. if you have children
get them to help. husband also. You might start with a list of to dos for each day.

Work on one room at a time so you don't get overwhelmed. I have that one room in my house I just can't keep clean...my bedroom. As much as it bothers me, I just can't keep it neat. Don't feel bad..you're not alone.
