Does anybody know how to figure it out mathematically? I want Jeff to win.

If Jeff Gordon won both races, then Jimmie would have to gain less than 203 points. There's many possible combinations, but Jeff Gordon still could win if JJ got 3rd, but the next race he'd have to get 42nd, and the other guys would have to fall behind him somewhere.

Look for Jimmie and the others finishing 21st or worse, which probably won't happen.

Here's a chart on how many points are awarded for what place:

What an odd question? Why these three and discount the other two ahead of Gordon, Earnhardt and Hamlin? The simple answer is it probably just isn't going to happen. With so many varibles and so many drivers, it is hard to say. However, lets say Gordon gets max points the next two races, 380 at 190 per (180 for winning, 5 for leading and 5 for leading most) he would finish with 6380. From 5th on up. If Harvick scored 328 or more, he would beat Gordon. With no laps lead for Harvick, 2 3rds or better would net him 330. If Hamlin scored 303 or more, he would beat Gordon. With no laps lead for Hamlin, 2 5ths or better would do it. Earnhardt would need 301, 2 5ths or better. Kenseth would 240, or 2 14ths or better. Johnson would need 223 or 2 17ths or better. Thats all with no laps led and if Gordon got max points in the next two races. Now consider Gordon has never won at Phoenix or Homestead. Pole or not this weekend, he has had extra troubles at Phoenix. Looking at Johnson, Gordon needs to make up 79 points per race. Take out laps led and here is how it works out. Listing Gordons finish and where he would need Johnson to finish(or worse) 1-19, 2-23,3-24,5-26,6-31,7-32,8-34,9-35,10-36,11-38,12-39,13-40,14-41,15-43.

except the #40 8 wrecks, i imagine Jimmie Johnson is as solid of a motive force as Tony Stewrart. i have not even pronounced Jeff Gordon into this equation yet, so i wager my recommendations might want to be that Jimmy is somewhat extra deserving to win. I wanna see Truex provide him hell at abode. both way whoever wins the NEXTEL cup, both is the finest or were given fortunate, and that is the way it is going.

Johnson, kenseth, and harvick have to go home and watch the race from there living room, then gordon MIGHT win the cup.

Realistically, the Chase would be won by one of the drivers in the T0p 3 in points. 0nly Phoenix & Homestead left. Sorry Jeffie keep trying.

Sorry, but it's not going to happen! The odds are against him, and there's no chance that all THREE of them are going to screw up enough for him to get up there.
